Black Stories Matter 2021

Join Better Said Than Done on Thursday, June 10th, for our second annual Black Stories Matter show. Tickets are on sale now!

Though this is a storytelling show, it is also a fundraiser. Proceeds benefit the Fairfax County NAACP. Karen Campblin, Chapter President of the Fairfax County NAACP, had this to say about the benefit event.

“Black stories aren’t being elevated nearly enough in our society, which makes events and forums like these critical. Fairfax NAACP’s main charge is making the voice of our community heard to ensure political, social, educational and economic equality for all of Fairfax and the Commonwealth of Virginia. We’re very excited to work with Better Said Than Done and look forward to future collaboration.”

Your host for this special evening is Nick Baskerville. He’ll be bringing you six immensely talented storytellers who will fill the night with powerful, thought-provoking, and compelling stories.

We asked these tellers to reflect on why it’s important to hear these stories of the Black experience in today’s world. Here’s what David Fakunle, Lynette Ford, Chetter Galloway, Arthuretta Holmes-Martin, Carol Moore, and Devan Sandiford had to say…

David Fakunle

David Fakunle: My story is an example of the beautiful power within Black lives. My journey is one of serendipity, or perhaps a grander design. In a country where so much of Black existence is systemically determined, it is hard to imagine anything happening outside of White power’s nefarious intent. My life is a series of moments that happened for one reason or another, and the collective outcome is a man fighting racial oppression with unapologetic Blackness, and winning.

Lynette Ford

Lynette Ford: My story speaks about a couple moments when words and stories had an impact on mindsets of assumed privilege and misplaced power. As black individuals living and working in many European-American social constructs, we must make others aware that we daily face such unnecessarily stressful moments. It’s waaay past time for them to stop.

Chetter Galloway

Chetter Galloway: Stories can help people understand the complexities in our society and also provide a perspective which they may have never considered or heard. They also enable us to bridge gaps and make a connection with a common theme to help us make sense of things.

Arthuretta Holmes-Martin

Arthuretta Holmes-Martin: Storytelling is the oldest form of communication. It is the first form of teaching in every culture. Storytelling directly affects the brain and affects human thought and behavior. I do not tell stories to simply entertain; I tell stories to message and trigger the listener to experience the story.

Carol Moore

Carol Moore: I think it’s important for people to understand how certain aspects of our differences can be noticed and acknowledged, that’s great! But they should always be respected as well.

Devan Sandiford

Devan Sandiford: It’s important to hear Black people’s stories because the breadth of our lives are not often featured in mainstream media. Instead a singular story of our existence often drives people’s perceptions of who we are as a monolithic group. Listening to diverse stories can open our eyes to perspectives we otherwise don’t have access to, which ultimately expands the understanding of our own humanity.

Now that you’ve gotten a glimpse into the importance of these stories, come experience them for yourself. The show starts at 8:00 P.M. EDT. It is live streamed and all ticket holders can watch live OR anytime after until July 7, 2021. Tickets are pay-what-you-can, with a standard price of $25 and a minimum of $5 (plus a $1 handling fee). All proceeds benefit the Fairfax County NAACP.

Ten Years, Two Virtual Hurrahs

This May marks the 10th anniversary of Better Said Than Done. Our community has grown a lot in the last decade, so much so that it’s going to take two storytelling shows to celebrate it!

We’re also marking the end of our time exclusively mounting our shows online. Come June, we’ll step back out in the world, gathering in person for the first time in over a year. (more on the particulars soon)

We want to use these next two shows to celebrate the fact that, even in the face of pandemic and isolation, we were able to carry on with spirit, camaraderie, and joy.

And that’s just what we’re gonna do! So let me tell you a little bit about these two shows…

The first show is this coming Thursday, May 13th. “Anniversaries” is the theme for the night, with each of our tellers bringing their own unique spin on the topic. Our fearless leader Jessica Robinson is your host for the evening, and she’ll bring to the stage four amazing tellers: Nick Baskerville, Calvin S. Cato, Heather Forest, and Mo Reynolds. Yours humbly, Jack Scheer, will also do my best to live up to the occasion. The show starts at 8:00pm EDT. Go ahead and grab your tickets now, why don’t you?

A week and a half later on Saturday, May 22nd, we’ll present “Perfect Ten” in honor of our ten years of storytelling and community. I have the great privilege to host that night, and I’ll be ushering up six consummate artists: Jeff Gere, Misty Mator, Kory May, Anne Shimojima, Laura Simms, and the aforementioned Jessica Robinson. Hey look, this show starts at 8 o’clock Eastern as well! And you can buy your tickets right now!

That’s two anniversary parties in one month celebrating ten years. It would be our honor to have you join us. Tickets once again are pay-what-you-think-it’s-worth, with a suggested price of $10 ($1 for each year) and a minimum of $5, plus a one dollar handling fee. All ticket holders will receive a link to a recording of the show the next day, if you want to relive what promises to be two wonderful evenings.

Here’s to ten times ten more years!

Double the Workshop Fun

What’s that famous saying? Double the workshop, double the fun! I am teaching 2 storytelling workshops in May, and the fun part is that you can take one OR both! Both workshops are unique and provide different experiences, so you can take the 90 minute workshop on May 1st, and then expand on what you learned in the 4 hour workshop on May 8th. Or you can just take one or the other and get a complete, stand alone workshop experience.

On May 1st at 11:00am EDT, join me as I present “The Art of Crafting a Personal Story.” This 90 minute workshop is part of a series hosted by Story Crossroads.
Pay what you can. $25 gets you the recording, in case you want to watch again, or miss any part of it.

Watch this video about the workshop OR this video in which Rachel Hedman briefly interviews Jessica Robinson about her auspicious start in storytelling.

Register for the Art of Crafting a Personal Story Here

On May 8th at 1:00pm EDT, join me for our 4 hour “Spotlight on You” workshop. Class size is limited so each student will not only have time to ask questions about the lessons but to also share a story and receive critical feedback. $65 per registrant.

The Great Outdoors

We’ve all spent a lot of time cooped up in our homes these last few months. The usual winter weather, compounded by lockdown restrictions, means we are now very familiar with the interiors of our respective domiciles. Isn’t it time we broke free from those confines and breathed a little fresh air?

Well, Better Said Than Done is here to inspire you to do just that! This Saturday, April 24th, we’re presenting The Great Outdoors! It’s a night of tales about finding, exploring, and communing with wide-open spaces. The show starts at 8 P.M. EDT. You can get your tickets right here!

Host Nick Baskerville will be your guide to these uncharted territories, navigating you to our seven wonderful storytellers for the evening. Here are those intrepid explorers…

Milbre Burch

Milbre Burch is a GRAMMY-nominated recording artist, a nationally known storyteller, and an acclaimed teaching artist and story coach. She has been featured eight times at the National Storytelling Festival, and performed across the US, in Europe and Asia. She has released numerous award-winning storytelling recordings on the Kind Crone label and is a storytelling studies scholar. Off stage, she’s a Georgia girl who married a Mississippi boy living in New England. Groomed as a girl-child to stay indoors lest she attract danger, Milbre went on to explore parts of the Appalachian trail, wilderness camp at the Cumberland Island National Seashore, and take regular hikes in the woods near her home.

Via Goode

Via Goode has been a professional storyteller for more than 10 years, but has been “telling stories” (her mother’s synonym for lying) for many more than 10! Her specialty is sharing folk tales with younger audiences, headlining in more than 850 performances in public and private schools, libraries, and recreation centers. In addition to storytelling, Via also conducts workshops and professional development trainings. She is a former preschool teacher, teacher’s aide, and substitute teacher, and is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the National Storytelling Network, and is the membership chairperson for the Virginia Storytelling Alliance.

Michael Guinn

Michael Guinn is professional performance poet, events coordinator, published author, award winning actor, community advocate and veteran residing in the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas area. He holds a masters degree in social work and works full time as a permanent supportive housing coach in Dallas. Michael has more than 22 years of stage and open mics, and is known locally and internationally for his work with global anthologies. He works with both youth and adults via poetry slams, virtual events, films, radio and public speaking events. He hosts live performances and open mics in and around Dallas/Fort Worth.

Arthuretta Holmes-Martin

Arthuretta Holmes-Martin was a featured storyteller at 2020 National Association of Black Storyteller’s Festival, the Women’s History 2020 Maryland Chautauqua, and the Women’s Storytelling Festival in 2021. She is also a performing artist with the Washingon Revels Jubilee Voices. Arthuretta teaches public speaking and storytelling workshop at Compass Homeschool Enrichment. She is an advocate for human and civil rights, and inspires her audiences with her personal stories of healing and transformation. Last year, she performed on Friday the 13th, but the audience at the Auld Shebeen realized her story made it their lucky day.

Lou Novak

Lou Novak was born abroad into a military family. There was always American TV available on the bases and consequently lots of storytelling took place under street lamps on base. When Lou was scout aged, he joined scouts and enjoyed hearing tales around the campfire. As an adult he went to sea and learned a whole different genre called sea stories. After some time Lou was able to provide instruction using cautionary tales to sea scouts and budding mariners. After some classes with Story District provided by the Armed Services Arts Partnership he was able to perform on stage.

Rocky Ross

Rocky Ross is the host & curator of The Reboot • Storytelling ReImagined, a live story showcase that, in the B4 times, drew standing-room-only audiences to their garden theater under the stars on California’s central coast. The Reboot features seasoned and novice tellers sharing true personal stories around the monthly theme, with a sometimes dash of spoken word, improv, sketch and impromptu audience participation thrown into the mix. Rocky also does improv with the Central Coast Comedy Theater and coaches people of all ages and backgrounds to bring new voices to The Reboot stage.

Sarah Snyder

Sarah Snyder is a writer and storytelling living in northern Virginia. She blogs about self-care and retreats at Luna River Voices. She’s an avid lover of the outdoors and the author of four books of nonfiction, including a memoir about living in Scotland and a travel guide to Montana, which you can learn more about on her website. Her latest book is coming out in June: “DIY Solo Retreats: A Handbook for Creating Your Space, Setting and Intention, and Getting the Self-Care You Deserve.”

So join us from your couch, office chair, or picnic table for a celebration of far-flung skies and nature’s beauties. Things kick off at 8:00 P.M. EDT. Ticket sales close a few minutes before that and are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested contribution of $20 and a minimum of $5 (plus a $1 handling fee). All proceeds are shared among the tellers and Better Said Than Done. Beat the rush and grab your ticket now!

And don’t worry if you’re busy Saturday night enjoying the actual great outdoors. All ticket holders receive a link to the recording the next day, so you can watch when you are back inside.
