Labored Storytellers

On Saturday, September 24, we will be hearing stories about work, labor, tasks, and even relaxation in our Labor Day Stories show, live, in-person at The Auld Shebeen, in Fairfax City, VA, and streaming online.
Tickets are on sale now!

Since the best stories are often about the worst experiences (a great organization I know even has a tagline of “Life is better in the telling” to emphasize that point), I thought it would be fun to hear about some great work experiences instead. So I asked emcee Bonnie Gardner and storytellers Bill Grella, Lou Novak, Antwan Perry, Jack Scheer, Klyde Siegfriedt, and Aimee Snow to “tell me about one of your favorite jobs.” Here’s what they had to say on the subject…

Bonnie Gardner: In high school, I had a part-time job shelving books at the public library, but one summer when one of the bookmobile librarians went on maternity leave, I filled in. It ended up being my favorite job ever — bringing books and media to shut-in seniors (who sometimes fed us cookies and lemonade), moms at home with young kids, and folks in the most remote and impoverished areas of our rural region, who lacked transportation to get to the library. I loved to see the excitement when the bookmobile would rattle down a road and folks would rush out of their houses. Like an ice cream truck, but with books!

Bill Grella: All my life I wanted to work and be around airliners.  When I finally got on with Piedmont (my first airline job) I was in heaven!  Working around them was awesome to this kid!  My favorite thing was guiding the planes into and out of the gates, for me it was pure joy!
I can’t go on because – SPOILERS.

Lou Novak: The job I loved the most was being a River Guide at a High Adventure Base. I loved it because I loved paddling on the rivers, working with young people, and showing natural beauty.

Nothing like communing with nature and the young – all while getting some exercise!

Antwan Perry: As it relates to a job I have held that I loved most and why? It was my first job in education. I, a fresh college graduate with a degree in political science, was hired to teach math to students repeating the 9th grade for the 2nd or 3rd or 4th time. While I thought it would be difficult to connect with the students or gain their respect because I was so young, I had a blast! Since I was younger, they listened to me, we dance battled, laughed at the same jokes, and to my surprise and theirs, I taught them math! Many of these students I still speak with today….15+ years later.

Jack Scheer: While I was in college I worked for three years at Northern Lights Bookstore in DeKalb, IL. We were the funky bookstore in town – we carried comic books, role-playing games, and zines alongside general interest books. We had impressive visual arts and New Age sections as well. The owner was incredibly kind and caring, and the camaraderie among the staff was excellent. There are days I would give almost anything to run that register again.

If you own a bookstore and want Jack to pay you to work there, find him at jzscheer on instagram and twitter

Sue Searing

Klyde Siegfriedt: My favorite job was running a bookstore. I loved my staff and customers and of course all the books. As a die hard bibliophile, it was a place I always enjoyed going to work, interacting with my staff, customers and authors. Even though there were days I hated, most days were great…..even during Christmas. Bookstore customers tend to be a different breed of customers and are usually in a good mood-even at Christmas.

Aimee Snow: I worked at Blockbuster Video after college. I loved recommending movies to people and I realized I was really good at multitasking and dealing with the public.

Ah, yes, Blockbuster video. We’ll have to explain to the kids at home what that was and why I was excited to go there every Friday night for many years.

Now that you’ve got a sense of what kinds of jobs our storytellers have loved, join us on September 24th to see them working it!

Our show starts at 7:00 P.M. Eastern. Doors open at 6:00pm. In-person at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA, and streaming online. Tickets here – or at the door.

The Auld Shebeen is located at 3971 Chain Bridge Rd., Fairfax, VA 22030. Better Said Than Done performs DOWNSTAIRS. The entrance is located on North St. A full dinner and bar menu are available.

PS – as for me, your friendly blogger, my favorite job was working at Steve’s Comic Relief, in my hometown, during summer’s off from college. Most of the time I was completely alone in a large room filled with comic books. That’s where I fell in love with Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, J.M. DeMatteis and many other great, male writers. I’d like to say that’s where I dreamed of becoming a comic book writer, but mostly I just wanted to be a character.

Twisted Tales Too: This Time It’s Twisted-er!

A long time ago, like back in April, Better Said Than Done hosted our first Twisted Tales – a show in which each storyteller was challenged to tell one overall story, consisting of multiple stories twisted together – interwoven, if you will. The two (or more) stories paired perfectly forming a new story in turn, a better story, a twisted tale.

That show was such a smash that we decided to do it again! On Thursday, September 8th at 8:00 P.M. Eastern, we’re presenting Twisted Tales: Dual Stories Interwoven! Join us online as emcee Chetter Galloway brings you tellers Vicki Bryan, Margaret Burk, Katie Green, Marilyn McPhie, and Sue Searing!
Tickets are on sale now!

By way of introduction to our evening’s performers, I asked them a question about pairing up – “what is one of your favorite pairings, and why?” Here’s what they had to say on the subject…

Vicki Bryan

Vicki Bryan: Butter pecan ice cream with baked potato chips. The ice cream MUST be soft enough so that I may scoop it up with a chip. The chips should be firm enough to scoop with; yet slightly salty so that the sweetness of the ice cream is not overwhelmed. Yummy!!!

Margaret Burk

Margaret Burk: A good red wine and chocolate, a good red wine and steak, a good red wine and almost anything. I like the complex aromas and tastes of wines from different countries and different regions in the US. I like to see if I can smell and taste differences. And I like to remember the wines I’ve had when I have traveled and see if I can match those experiences back home. I like to sip and savor.

Chetter Galloway

Chetter Galloway: My favorite pairing is Batman and Robin. They are by far the best hero and sidekick combination I believe in history. Many people outside the comic book world do not realize (or care) that there have been multiple Robins/Boy Wonders including one who was a woman. They have an interesting power dynamic that gets intense as the ‘Robins’ grow up and become their own person to escape the overbearing shadow of the Dark Knight! The Joker even killed one when they tried to do so in the series A Death in the Family.

Katie Green

Katie Green: Sunshine and fresh air. Sunshine makes me happy and fresh air lets me breathe easier. Sunshine and fresh air to me – means being outside, and I love being in the natural world.

Marilyn McPhie

Marilyn McPhie: A favorite pairing is a good book — and chocolate. Indulgence for the body and soul.

Sue Searing

Sue Searing: You asked me to tell you my favorite pairing, right off the top of my head… and immediately my mind went blank. So I did what I always do when I’m stumped. I asked my wife. The first thing out of her mouth was “Minneapolis and St. Paul.” Indeed, it’s the perfect answer. Since moving to the Twin Cities seven years ago, these two vibrant cities, perched on either side of the Mississippi River, have become my favorite places too. We enjoy twice the restaurants, twice the concerts and sport teams and shows, twice the parks, twice the political drama. I suppose we crave such abundance because before moving here, we spent twenty years in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Really, why settle for one city when you can live in a pair?

Now that you’ve had a peek into the minds of our tellers, join us online to see what great jobs they do at perfectly pairing – and weaving together – stories! Our show starts at 8:00 P.M. EDT on Zoom. As usual this is a “pay what you like” show – the suggested contribution is $15, with a minimum of $5 (plus a $1 ticketing charge). We hope we’ll have you in our audience – grab your tickets now!

The Broken Hearts Club

Of all the “the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to,” perhaps the most painful and poignant is heartbreak. Whether it comes in the form of a lover leaving, a loved one passing, or even losing a beloved family pet, the keen sense of emptiness and despair can be truly overwhelming. Yet once we pass through the hurt, surviving a broken heart can often lead to greater strength, compassion, and capacity to love.

Join Better Said Than Done online this Thursday, August 11th, as we explore this theme with “The Broken Hearts Club: Stories of Heartbreak.” Our fearless leader Jessica Robinson is your host for the evening, and our brave and bold storytellers are Claire Castell, Laura Deal, Jeff Doyle, Natalie Jones, Bowen Lee, and Rita Rigano. Buy your tickets now!

I wanted to find out if our cast had any wisdom to share on how they’ve navigated heartbreak. I asked them “what is your go-to source of comfort when nursing a broken heart?” Their answers are as varied as they are.

Claire Castell

Claire Castell: It’s a toss between meaningless sex with one night stands or ice cream. These days ice cream is easier to find.

Laura Deal

Laura Deal: When I’m broken-hearted I find comfort in flowers, clouds, and the beauty of nature that reminds me that the world is bigger and more wonderful than my own problems.

Jeff Doyle

Jeff Doyle: My answer to heartache of any type is to bury myself in work so I don’t have to think about it.

Natalie Jones

Natalie Jones:

Wine (The big bottle)
Women (My longtime girlfriends who already knew he was a scumbag)
Song (Lucinda Williams, please)

Bowen Lee

Bowen Lee: My go-to source of comfort is focusing on the new direction I need to be on when newly single. I figure out my new coordinates for navigating life on my own. Whether the course I chart is through heavy seas or calm water, making my life work with what I have now is not only necessary, but fulfilling.

Rita Rigano

Rita Rigano: My go-to for a broken heart is chocolate. Chocolate bars, chocolate ice cream, chocolate covered almonds. High quality chocolate, not the cheap stuff. There’s some chemical in chocolate that switches neurons in your brain to make you feel happier. Also, the act of eating chocolate is sensuous.

(Normally I restrict these answers exclusively to our tellers, but Jessica really wanted to get in on the fun. Therefore I’m making a rare exception…)

Jessica Robinson

Jessica Robinson: My go-to for mending a broken heart is mindless entertainment. Whether that be a movie or TV show I’ve watched a million times, or a beach read book. And, if we’re being honest here, the mindless entertainment is usually accompanied by a salty and/or creamy treat. Ben and Jerrys Chubby Hubby is the perfect combo – vanilla ice cream with chocolate covered peanut butter filled pretzels. I feel better just thinking about it!

Now that our tellers have shared their ways to soothe the pain of lost love, make sure to join us to hear their tales of surviving a relationship’s end! The show starts on Zoom at 8:00 P.M. EDT. The suggested contribution for tickets is $16, with a minimum of $5 and other more generous tiers that let you really show our tellers the love! Click right here to get your ticket!

Bed and Breakfast and Beyond

As it so happens, your humble correspondent is writing this blog post from a lovely bed and breakfast a few miles north of Baltimore. There’s just something about the homey, laid-back atmosphere of a lodging that’s run by people doing it for the love of providing hospitality that invigorates the sense of adventure and openness to new things.

Better Said Than Done wants to whet your appetite for such pleasures. This Saturday, July 23th, we’re presenting a hybrid show, both at the Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA, and online entitled “Bed and Breakfast and Beyond: Stories About Where We Sleep, Eat and Travel.” Your guides into these invigorating areas are storytellers Jenn Ameena, Mylinda Butterworth, Catherine Calvin, Vijai Nathan, Lou Novak, Dr. Antwan Perry, and Sufian Zhemukhov. Get your tickets now!

As an enticement to join us on this journey, let’s take a moment and meet these esteemed tellers…

Jenn Ameena

Jenn Ameena is a policy analyst by day and an absurdity magnet by night. She has performed on the stages of Story District and Risk! with stories that include the Worst Job and the Worst Date. Originally hailing from Long Island, Jenn struggles with pronouncing words like “coffee” and “water.”She earned her MPP from Pepperdine University and her BA in Africana Studies from Cornell University.

MyLinda Butterworth

MyLinda Butterworth is Totally Stories or that is what she claims as she brings stories to life as an award-winning author, performing artist, or in the virtual world where she proclaims herself the queen of alliterations as she has recorded and posted nearly 900 of them on her YouTube channel Totally Stories. She encourages her listeners to enjoy the journey as she stokes the fires of imagination as she shares a plethora of stories.

Catherine Calvin

Catherine Calvin attended two workshops with BTSD before taking the stage for the first time in 2015. A graduate of GMU, she enjoyed collecting stories through her own experiences and those of the customers and guests she served over years doing sales in the hotel industry. Today, she serves the NoVA community as account executive with restaurant technology company Toast. Catherine shares a few stories here on stage but Bogart, her cat, hears them all.

Vijai Nathan

Vijai Nathan is an Indian-American comedian and storyteller making people laugh across America and internationally too! She’s been featured on NPR, and is a contributing writer for Washington Post Magazine’s Date Lab. She’s currently workshopping her latest one-woman show, “I’m Not Racist, But…” She’s one of the few South Asian artists to be invited to perform at the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian, Library of Congress and Constitution Hall. She lovingly and hilariously talks about growing up as an Indian in America, dating, cultural clashes with her parents, and the racism she dealt with as a child and now as a comedian.

Lou Novak

Lou Novak was born abroad into a military family. There was always American TV available on the bases and lots of storytelling took place under street lamps on base. Lou joined scouts and enjoyed hearing tales around the campfire. As an adult he went to sea and learned a whole different genre called sea stories. After some classes with Story District provided by the Armed Services Arts Partnership he was able to perform on stage.

Antwan Perry

Dr. Antwan Perry is an enigma. Learn more about him at Saturday night’s show!

Sufian Zhemukhov

Sufian Zhemukhov is an award-winning author and performer. He received The JJ Reneaux Emerging Artist Award from the National Storytelling Network. Sufian’s solo shows have been featured off-Broadway and nationwide. Sufian’s stories are based on his personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and political analyst, which might be funnier than it sounds. His recent book won The Best Book Award from the International Studies Association.

With those introductions to let you know who will be telling us about their adventures seeking slumber, food, and the road previously untaken, come join us to find out what they found! The downstairs entrance doors to the Auld Shebeen open at 6:00 P.M. and the show kicks off at 7:00. Tickets being at $5 for the online stream and $15 for the in-person show. Grab your tickets now!
