Celebrating 7 Years of Storytelling

To celebrate Better Said Than Done’s 7 year anniversary, we hosted a storytelling show at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA. I know, I know. It’s kind of what we always do. But we wanted to enjoy the celebration so we did something we love – we shared true, personal stories with our Northern Virginia audience!

In addition to some great storytellers sharing fantastic, amazing stories, I, as Founder of Better Said Than Done, shared a little of our origin story – which you can watch here.

I also thanked a lot of people who have helped make Better Said Than Done the thriving storytelling behemoth it is today. In short, here are some people I will be eternally grateful to…for past, present and future help!

Paula Adkins, Nick Baskerville, Dustin Fisher, Bill Grella, Jennifer Greene, Derek Hills, Sandra Hull, Jennifer Luu, Bart Robinson, Adam Ruben, Jack Scheer, Mary Supley, Anna Marie Trester, and Cyndi Wish.

And, of course, I am always grateful to the storytellers. Over the past 7 years, we’ve heard amazing, wonderful, one-of-a-kind, personal stories and those are what make Better Said Than Done thrive.

Thank you to all the storytellers and to the 7 storytellers of our anniversary show!

After 7 Years, We Are Feeling Lucky

You can do a lot with the number 7. The 7 colors of the rainbow make 256 colors on a crayon box. Ordering the number 7 value meal can fill your belly. Rolling the number 7 at the craps gambling table can make you rich! Here at Better Said Than Done, we are feeling so lucky about our 7 years of storytelling, we want to tell our story. Well, 7 stories to be exact.

On May 19, join host and Better Said Than Done Founder Jessica Robinson and storytellers Nick Baskerville, Noa Baum, Geraldine Buckley, Mike Kane, Len Kruger, David Supley Foxworth, and Cyndi Wish for stories of adventure, love, suspense, and more. Better Said Than Done stories are always true, personal, and intended for an adult audience.

Know your Rites

The Breakfast Club. American Pie. Life of Pi. All of these movies tell great stories about people at pivotal points in their lives. Becoming aware of things they never thought of until one crucial moment. But if you watch all three movies, that would take up over 6 hours of your time. I wonder where you could go to get the same experience in an hour or so, while sitting in a relaxing coffee house environment?

Rites of Passage: stories of ceremonies, customs, and

Transitions. Hear personal stories from people telling about which way they went in the fork in the road. All without getting detention, without facing a tiger, but still getting some really good pie. Featuring stories from Richard Barr, Erin Benbennick, Bill

Burton, Davine Ker, Jessica Piscitelli Robinson, and Sufian Zhemukhov,

hosted by Mary Supley Foxworth.

Storytellers Workin’ It

Host Jennifer Greene and storytellers Jack Scheer, Miriam Nadel, Richard Barr, Holly Seibold, Jack Pelar, Tracy Cody and Robert Lovejoy worked hard in our April spoken word storytelling show at The Auld Shebeen in downtown Fairfax, VA. In “Gettin’ Busy: stories of work, chores and business time” storytellers shared true, personal stories about everything from unknown powdery substances to satanic cats.

Capture Video videotapes most of our storytelling shows at The Auld Shebeen, so even if you weren’t there, you can almost feel like you were.

Below are photos and videos of each of our storytellers. But with storytelling, as with most live events, you really have to be there to experience it in all it’s glory. Be there next on May 19th at our 7 year anniversary celebration and storytelling show!

Watch Richard Barr’s story about the gun he used for work.

In Holly Seibold’s story, we learned all about the importance of feminine hygiene.

Jack Pelar took on the chore of replacing a few little things in his old house.

First time storyteller Tracy Cody – a storytelling workshop graduate – shared a story about some birds who had nested in a most inconvenient place.

In addition to her role as host, Jennifer Greene also told a story, about what it’s like to find the right career, despite others’ advice.

Jack Scheer – who will be teaching the June 9th storytelling workshop at The Insight Shop in Vienna, VA – shared a tale of some misplaced, unidentified white powder.

We heard Miriam Nadel’s story of growing up back in the days when women didn’t have the cool job opportunities men had.

And Robert Lovejoy transported us back to the future – the future of ice cream.

Our work as storytellers is to connect with the audience. Our job as Better Said Than Done is to build a strong storytelling community in Northern Virginia. The storytellers of Gettin Busy performed their stories, and their duty, with alacrity. I hope you’ll come to a storytelling show or take a storytelling workshop and join the community we’re building.

Our next show is “Rites of Passage,” May 16th at the Lake Anne Coffee House in Reston, VA

Then we’re back at The Auld Shebeen on May 19th (NOT OUR USUAL SATURDAY) for our 7 year anniversary party and storytelling show. The storytelling show is FREE as a thank you to all of our storytellers – past and future – and to the Northern Virginia community that has filled our audience for the past 7 years. Join us for the night and the next 7 years!

Storytelling Videos to Make You Want to Return

Our March storytelling show at The Auld Shebeen was called “Hit the Road Jack: stories about leaving, travel and return.” Below are videos of some of the night’s storytellers sharing their true, personal stories – stories so good, you’ll want to hit the road and head to our next storytelling show!

The show was hosted by storyteller and fan of some basketball team (I’m unclear on which one) Dustin Fisher.
Dustin also performed some spoken word storytelling for us, in addition to his hosting and fan club duties. Videos of many of the night’s true, personal stories follow.

Watch Dustin Fisher’s story about leaving the traditional work force behind.

Watch storyteller Jack Pelar’s story of hitting the road in Bosnia.

If you’ve ever wanted to take a train from Lithuania to Estonia, you can hear all about it in Richard Barr’s story.

Jack Scheer shares how the end of his marriage caused him to hit the road.

For Jessica Robinson’s honeymoon, she went looking for romance.

Find out why old man Joff Infante had to call the cops to get those dern’d kids off his yard!

If you didn’t make it to the March storytelling show, you missed a great night out. And as grateful as we are to Capture Video for videotaping all our shows, watching videos is just not the same as being at a live show. So hit the road and join us at our next storytelling show in the City of Fairfax.

We will be back at The Auld Shebeen on April 28th for “Gettin’ Busy!” Put those hard earned dollars to work and save some money by purchasing tickets in advance.

We promise, you won’t want to hit the road after that show either!

Poor Jack had to Hit the Road

Our March show at The Auld Shebeen was called “Hit the Road Jack: stories about leaving, travel and return.” And, of course, our two Jacks had to get in on the action. Poor, poor, Jacks. We don’t want you to hit the road! We like your true, personal stories!

In addition to the two Jacks, the spoken word storytelling show was hosted by burlesque artist/storyteller Dustin Fisher.

Not only did Dustin host the show and share his own, personal story, he also had more wardrobe changes than a Cher concert. And fortunately for all of us, there were no wardrobe malfunctions!

Our first non stripping storyteller of the night, AND our first Jack, was Jack Pelar, who shared a tale of adventure on the high roads of Bosnia.

Elinor Klein’s story also involved a rather horrifying road trip, and not only because of the road conditions!

Richard Barr switched things up and took us along on a train ride from Lithuania to Estonia.

The second but not least Jack, Jack Scheer, explained why “Hit the Road, Jack” is his least favorite song.

Jessica Robinson’s story was one of romance and mystery along the Romantic Road.

We then listened to Joff Infante explain how he had a bit of trouble getting someone to hit the road, despite police intervention.

And Cyndi Wish left us wanting more with her story of leaving a marriage to go surf!

It was a great night out, a fantastic storytelling show, the kind of event no one wanted to leave. Alas, all good things must end. So too, with “Hit the Road, Jack.”

The good news is, not only will Better Said Than Done be back at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA on Saturday, April 28th, but so will BOTH our Jacks. Join us for “Getting Busy.” Put those hard earned dollars to work and save some money by purchasing tickets in advance.

We promise, you won’t want to hit the road after that show either!
