Storytellers of Love and Marriage

In Love & Marriage,” our February spoken word storytelling show at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA, storytellers Jack Scheer, Marie Turner, Dustin Fisher, Sheila Arnold Jones, Susan Gordon, Len Kruger, Miriam Nadel, and Nick Baskerville shared true personal stories about, well, about love and/or marriage.

It was a fantastic night of storytelling and I am truly broken-hearted for you if you missed it. But, because, dear audience, I have a heart, I’m giving you a chance to watch videos of the storytellers performances below.

Still Roaring

In April of 2017, Better Said Than Done started a movement. We asked women to share their true stories of obstacles. We asked women to speak up. To tell their tales. To Roar!

Despite the overwhelming success of the storytelling show Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors, the book of the same name, and yes, the movement, it seems that we women still have more stories to tell and a long way to go before we run out of story making moments. #MeToo #TimesUp #Roar

The good news is that women get one month every year in which we get to talk just a little louder. March is Women’s History Month and the City of Fairfax Public Library is celebrating the month by hosting a series of events on the theme of “Nevertheless, She Persisted.” And we get to join our voices to theirs in a free storytelling event at the library.

Join us. Roar with us.

Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors Persists
March 3, 2018
11:00AM – 12:15PM
City of Fairfax Regional Library
10360 North St.
Fairfax, VA 22030
Free event
Free parking in the building.
Storytellers of Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors share stories of persistence.

The book, Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors will be available for purchase during the event. All proceeds from book sales benefit the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). Furthermore, Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors, is now available through the Fairfax County Library system. If you’re not quite ready to purchase the book, and maybe want to read it for free first, you can do that!

Read more about Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors, the inspiration for the book, and the 21 female authors who contributed to the book, here.

First Storytelling Videos of the Year

Our January storytelling show at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA was called General Hospital: stories of doctors, nurses, and patients. The storytelling show was hosted by me, Jessica Robinson, and in case you have never been to one of our shows, here’s a video of the little spiel I gave at the start of this one – which is typical to how our hosts usually start the shows.

I also shared a true, personal story along with the night’s other storytellers – Michael Zhuang, Alexandra Dixon, Richard Barr, Susan Trivers, Cyndi Wish, and Nick Baskerville.

And because we, at Better Said Than Done, are very nice, here are links to videos of each of the night’s amazing storytellers.

Storytelling Firsts for the Year

Our January storytelling show at The Auld Shebeen not only boasted a lineup of fantastic storytellers, it was also the host for several firsts of the year. “General Hospital: stories of doctors, nurses and patients” was our first show of 2018 at The Auld Shebeen, in Fairfax, VA – though it won’t be the last. It was the first time Susan Trivers stepped up on stage and shared a true, personal story – and we all hope it won’t be the last. And it was the first time in the history of Better Said Than Done that someone broke down in tears on stage – and I definitely hope it was the last because that someone was me. Hosting fail. I was so moved by one of the storytellers’ tales that I couldn’t pull it together in time to make a clever remark and introduce the next storyteller. I guess that’s proof enough that our stories get personal!

In addition to hosting, I also shared a true, personal story along with the night’s other storytellers – Michael Zhuang, Alexandra Dixon, Richard Barr, Susan Trivers, Cyndi Wish, and Nick Baskerville.

Here are some photos of the amazing storytellers who started 2018 off with stories so powerful I almost needed a doctor!

February is the month to learn storytelling

Have you been to one of our storytelling shows and thought, “I’d like to give that a try,” whether on or off stage? We can help you with that because, this month, we are offering four different workshops. Join us to learn the art of storytelling!

February 9  ̶  Your Business Story: Crafting Your Company Tale
Stories are a powerful way to communicate what you, your team, or business have to offer. In this half-day workshop, you will learn to develop characters, identify and craft stories, and how to tailor them for different media.

February 10  ̶  Spotlight on You: Telling the Story of Your Life
Whether you are a storytelling novice or are looking to brush up on your skills, this is the workshop for you. Come with an idea and leave with a story, as we cover character development, basic story structure, and how to win over the audience. (This workshop is also offered on March 17.)

February 12  ̶  Storytelling: Where to Begin
Beginnings and endings are challenging for many writers, and especially so when you are writing a true, personal story. Join us for this two-hour workshop at The Insight Shop to learn where to begin and how to end your story; visit The Insight Shop’s website for additional information and to register.

February 26  ̶  Take the Stage: Storytelling for Performance
Do you want to step up to the mic to share a story? This three-week series will give you the opportunity to learn and apply different story structures, incorporate dialogue and humor, learn techniques to prepare and perform, and more. (The workshop continues on March 5 and 12.)

Read more and register on our Workshops page. Address for workshop and additional details provided after paid registration

Lake Anne Coffee House

Better Said Than Done hosted our first storytelling show of 2018 at the Lake Anne Coffee House on Lake Anne in Reston, VA. We host a monthly storytelling show at the coffee and wine bar on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Below are a few photos of the storytellers. The wine and food at Lake Anne Coffee House are great. Sadly, the lighting is not ideal for capturing the fun we had hosting this storytelling show – actually hosted by Mary Supley Foxworth! – and hearing fabulous stories from David Supley Foxworth, Jessica Robinson, Nick Baskerville, Elinor Klein and Joff Infante. Come to the next storytelling show and see it for yourself!

You can find out more about our upcoming storytelling shows and purchase advance discount tickets here.

Want to learn the art of true, personal storytelling? We have a slew of storytelling workshops. Read all about our February 10 storytelling workshop, and more, here.

The Year in Storytelling – 2017 Edition

Better Said Than Done had a busy year. A successful year. An emotional year. Basically, we had a lot going on – so much so that I need to sum things up or this blog post will run 40 pages. Here are a few of the things that happened in Better Said Said Than Done storytelling in 2017.

Storytelling Shows
In addition to our usual, wonderful, last Saturday of the month shows at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, Better Said Than Done performed at a variety of venues and experimented with a few different show formats.
Old Friends:
We returned to Jammin’ Java in April to perform Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors. (More below.) We also returned to Epicure Cafe for a four part series of storytelling shows we called the Summer Spotlight Series. Each show featured one storyteller, sharing one feature length (approx. 60 mins.) story. Our spotlight storytellers included Susan Gordon, Jessica Robinson, Ellouise Schoettler and Anne Thomas.
And New:
In 2017, Better Said Than Done also began a new chapter, at a new venue. We took on a second monthly show – the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Lake Anne Coffee House in Reston, VA. These free shows, run by Mary Supley Foxworth, have been so successful that we are continuing with them into 2018!

Storytelling Workshops and Presentations:
Better Said Than Done storytelling teachers led corporate storytelling workshops and presentations for the Office of Personnel Management, George Washington University School of Business, the Warrior Womens Weekend, the Fall for the Book Festival, and an unnamed government agency. (Shhhh)
We also hosted our Spotlight on You, Your Business Story, and our Take the Stage storytelling workshops throughout the year, encouraging new storytellers to craft their own true stories.
In addition, Better Said Than Done teacher Jessica Robinson started teaching a six week storytelling course at The Insight Shop in Vienna, VA. Jessica will continue teaching at the Insight Shop in 2018, as well as leading some workshops there with Mary Supley Foxworth.
We love our corporate and non-profit clients and, more importantly, we love teaching the art of true, personal storytelling to organizations and individuals. We’re looking forward to doing a lot more teaching in 2018!

Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors
In April, Better Said Than Done started a movement. We put on a show with an all female cast and published a book by 21 female authors on the theme of Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors. We stood on stage, and wrote on the page, to say, “We are women. Hear us roar!” Sadly, when the show came out, everyone said, “how timely.” When the book launched, everyone said, “how timely.” When Bards Alley Bookstore in Vienna, VA hosted an author event for us and when we performed Roar on the National Mall in Washington DC, everyone said, “how timely.” We created Roar in late 2016 because the idea of women’s rights, equality and respect seemed timely. Sadly, it still does. I look forward to the day when we don’t need to roar, because we will be heard without raising our voices. For now, join the movement, and roar with us!

Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors, a book anthology of true, personal stories about obstacles and empowerment, is available for purchase
at Bards Alley Bookstore in Vienna, VA, Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.

Fundraising
In total, Better Said Than Done raised over $2300 for charity in 2017. With our storytelling show at the Walker Nature Center in Reston, VA, we raised over $600 for Friends of Reston. With our Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors show and book sales, we donated over $1700 to the National Network to End Domestic Violence.
Storytelling is about community. It’s about sharing stories and connecting people. It follows that storytelling is a great way to help people through fundraising as well. Better Said Than Done has a commitment to grow our community, connecting people and helping where we can.

Our Storytelling Community
There are so many people involved in building and supporting the storytelling community in Northern Virginia, I can’t name every person.  I can say the success storytelling has seen in this area is due entirely to the people who support us:  the storytellers, who not only open their hearts, but work to turn their personal experiences into well-crafted stories; the audiences who come to hear those stories; the owners and staff at The Auld Shebeen, Lake Anne Coffee House, Jammin’ Java, and Epicure Cafe who give us a home for our community; the many storytelling organizations out there who help spread the word about storytelling; press and writers who have shared the word about our shows and events; and our storytelling students, corporate, non-profit and individual, who open themselves up to the experience of storytelling. Thank you for being part of this wonderful storytelling community. We will see you in 2018!

A Look Ahead – 2018
We already have the first several months of shows listed on our upcoming storytelling show page, including one at the City of Fairfax Public Library! We have a million storytelling workshops coming up, and events at the Insight Shop. We hope to see you soon – in a workshop, at a show, or on our stage.

Happy New Year!

Last Storytelling Show of 2017

Better Said Than Done storytelling ended the year on a high note with “Where the Heart Is: stories of home, family and love.” The audience was packed with our family – members of our storytelling community. Thank you for continuing to grow and support this Northern Virginia storytelling community. And thank you to the Auld Shebeen, in Fairfax, VA, for giving us our home.

For those who weren’t there, or any who want to look back, below are photos from the show as well as videos of most of the storytellers sharing their true, personal stories. Click on the links by each storyteller to watch their videos.

Richard Barr shared a story about an immigrant creating new holiday traditions here in America after leaving her own behind.

Jane Dorfman’s story was about the meaning behind a family heirloom.

Dru Ryan, joining Better Said Than Done for the first time, told a story about a man and his bike.

Bill Grella shared his love of travel.

Joe B. Roles expressed his love for a girl.

Sunil Saxena’s story was about home, wherever it may be.

Jessica Robinson’s story was about trying to make a home in a less than friendly neighborhood.

David Supley Foxworth continued the saga begun in Jessica’s story, by describing what happened after she left that unfriendly neighborhood.

At the end of the night, each of the storytellers came back on stage for a final bow. Better Said Than Done storytelling will reopen in January, 2018.
Join us for the many storytelling shows we already have planned, or take a storytelling workshop so you can join us IN a storytelling show!

We’ll see you in 2018!

4th Annual Night at the Improv Media

Our improv storytelling show is wildly popular and so we keep on doing it! This year marked our 4th Night at the Improv. The show featured storytellers sharing true, personal stories inspired on the spot from audience prompts. Hosted by Robert Lovejoy, storytellers included Richard Barr, Mary Supley Foxworth, Sunil Saxena, Jessica Robinson, Davine Ker, Jack Pelar, Derek Hills, Sandra Hull, and Tom Croce.

Normally I like to share each video on its own, but for our improv storytelling show, most of the storytellers told twice and there are just too many to make fit nicely in one blog. So here they all are – in one playlist!

And here are the wonderful photos taken by David Supley Foxworth of all the fun at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA. My favorite thing to do with these photos is look at the people in the background during the group improv storytelling sessions – and wonder what they’re thinking!

The year of storytelling – improv or otherwise – has come to an end. But we have two storytelling shows already booked in January and lots of storytelling workshops. We hope to see you there.

Have a great rest of the year!
